Welcome to J.C. Strother Hardware Company, operated today by the fourth
generation Strother family.
Imagine The Golden Isles nearly a century ago when the founder of our family’s
hardware company, John Carl “J.C.” Strother loaded heart pine planks into the
Buicks and Cadillacs pulled up to the lumberyard on the waterfront.
To the current generation, J.C. is our grandfather and great-grandfather, and was
a WWI veteran when he moved with his young family to St. Simons Island in 1928.
He was a builder, but supplies were scarce. He opened
J.C. Strother Hardware Company across the street from our current location in
1930.
Over the years, J.C. Strother and associates would build more than 300 homes on
St. Simons Island, St. Mary’s, and in Brunswick. He began building homes off
Frederica Road, shaping the historic neighborhood of
Oglethorpe Park. During WWII, Brunswick was abuzz with a growing population as
Liberty ships were being constructed. Many of these shipbuilders’ homes were
supplied and built by J.C., who also was the building contractor
for St. Simons Baptist Church, among other notable structures.
Stop in and say hi to the team! Bill Strother, Gordon Strother, Carlton Strother,
Clay Strother and our longtime associates.
We are glad you’re here.
